What changed
Connecticut had expected the next state building, fire safety, and fire prevention codes to take effect July 1, 2026. The Department of Administrative Services now states that the effective date has been delayed while approval of the next codes remains pending before the Legislative Regulation Review Committee.
What that means in the field
Do not automatically apply the proposed 2026 code package because the original target date has passed. For a design, permit, renovation, inspection issue, or scope discussion, confirm the code edition that legally applies to that project and the date that controls the permit or work.
The currently published Connecticut fire-code documents continue to identify the 2022 State Fire Safety Code as effective October 1, 2022 until a later code is formally adopted and becomes effective.
What is proposed for 2026
The proposed 2026 Connecticut State Fire Safety Code is based on the 2024 International Fire Code with Connecticut amendments. Proposed language is useful for planning, but a draft is not the same thing as an adopted requirement.
Before citing a new requirement, verify the effective code date and the project-specific AHJ interpretation. Do not treat a proposed Connecticut amendment as enforceable simply because it appears in the 2026 draft.
