Where this usually goes wrong

An EOL resistor is not a “trouble-clearing part.” Its location is what lets the panel supervise the field wiring. Moving it to the panel may make the trouble disappear while leaving the actual branch unsupervised.

What supervision is trying to prove

On many conventional initiating, notification, supervisory, and monitor circuits, the control equipment applies a small supervisory current and expects to see a defined electrical condition at the far end of the field wiring. The end-of-line device completes that supervision path. The exact method varies by circuit and manufacturer, so the listed wiring diagram controls.

Normal, open, and short are different states

In a simple resistor-supervised circuit, the panel distinguishes a normal resistance window from an open circuit and a short or low-resistance condition. That does not mean every measured resistance will equal the printed EOL value while devices remain connected. Diodes, modules, notification appliances, and internal electronics can affect meter readings. Isolate and test only according to the manufacturer procedure.

Why location matters

The EOL device belongs at the electrically far end of the supervised field circuit or at the location shown on the approved wiring diagram. If it is installed at the panel, the control unit can see the resistor even when the entire field branch is disconnected. That defeats the reason the circuit is supervised.

Using supervision to troubleshoot

When a circuit shows open, inspect the EOL location and verify the resistor value before tracing continuity back toward the panel. When a circuit shows short, isolate branches and devices to find where conductors are touching or a device has failed low. If a ground fault exists at the same time, handle it as a separate path because a circuit can have both continuity and a fault to ground.

Do not substitute values by appearance

Resistor color bands and printed values can be misread, especially after heat or paint exposure. Verify the required EOL value from the panel or module documentation and measure the component out of circuit when necessary. Some systems use EOL relays, capacitors, diodes, or manufacturer-specific modules instead of a simple resistor.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Moving the resistor to the panel to make an open trouble clear
  • Assuming every circuit on the same system uses the same EOL value
  • Measuring resistance on an energized circuit
  • Replacing the resistor before finding why the original supervision path opened
