Understand the boundary between systems

The fire pump controller monitors and controls the pump. The fire alarm system receives selected status signals through listed contacts or interface modules and annunciates them as required. Fire alarm technicians should not change controller logic, pressure settings, or internal power wiring unless specifically qualified and authorized.

Common monitored conditions

Typical interfaces may include pump running, controller trouble, phase reversal or phase failure, alternate power source status, and valve supervisory conditions. The exact signals depend on the controller type, power arrangement, adopted code, project specifications, and approved drawings.

Do not rely on terminal numbers from memory. Controller terminal designations vary by manufacturer and model.

Normally open and normally closed logic

Determine the normal contact state with the controller in its normal condition and compare it to the fire alarm module programming. The fire alarm input should supervise the field wiring and report the intended event classification. A contact that changes correctly at the controller can still be misreported because of incorrect module wiring, end-of-line placement, or programming.

Functional testing

Coordinate with the sprinkler or fire pump contractor and building representative. Verify each controller condition using the approved test method, observe the local controller indication, confirm the fire alarm point and event type, verify transmission to the supervising station where required, and restore the controller to normal.

Pump-running tests can involve water flow, noise, pressure changes, generator operation, and mechanical hazards. Follow the site procedure and keep clear of moving equipment.

Troubleshooting a missing signal

Work from the source outward. Confirm the controller actually changes the designated contact. Then verify voltage or continuity at the interface terminals, field module input, address, panel programming, and central-station mapping. Check whether another contractor recently replaced the controller or moved interface conductors.

Documentation

Record controller manufacturer and model, monitored signal, terminal designation from the approved documentation, normal contact state, fire alarm module address, panel event classification, supervising-station result, and who performed the pump-side test. Clear records reduce confusion during future inspections and controller replacements.
